Avatar 2 actress Kate Winslet has revealed that she celebrated a huge achievement while working on the sequel to James Cameron's epic.

Winslet, who joins the cast for the second Avatar movie as free-diver Ronal, managed to hold her breath while filming underwater for an eye-watering seven minutes, beating a time set by none other than Tom Cruise.

Cruise had previously held the impressive underwater filming record for holding his breath for six minutes while shooting 2015's Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, but Winslet has now claimed his crown.

Speaking to ET, the actress admitted that she would "probably never be able to do it again" but that she is very proud of her achievement.

"All of this week and the week before, I've had people coming up to me at work saying, 'Oh my god, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!' And I'm going, 'What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'," she said.

"It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again. That came at the end of four weeks' worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it."

The actress added that the opportunity to learn new skills – like holding your breath for a long time, clearly – is "one of the things [she] loves" about acting, saying: "We're very, very lucky as actors that often we have to learn a whole new skill".

Winslet recently revealed that she and Ronan actually choreographed their own sex scene for the movie, saying that they felt "really safe" on set to plan out their own movements.
