Authorities Investigating Circumstances Surrounding Matthew Perry's Death from Fatal Ketamine Dose

The LAPD is working with the DEA to determine the source of the ketamine that caused Matthew Perry's death in October 2023, per police

More than six months after Mathew Perry died, the California branch of the Drug Enforcement Administration is working with Los Angeles Police Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Friends alum died at the age of 54 on Oct. 28 and an autopsy report obtained by PEOPLE in December stated he died from acute effects of ketamine.

Other contributing factors to his death included drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine effects, referencing a medication used to treat opioid use disorder, per the report.

The manner of his death was ruled to be accidental. In December, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner closed its investigation into his death, PEOPLE reported at the time.

After the medical examiner released its report on Perry's death, the LAPD launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his overdose death in December, the department confirms to PEOPLE.

An investigative source with the LAPD confirms to PEOPLE that it is working with the DEA and the U.S. Postal Inspector to try to determine the source of the ketamine that led to Perry's death. The source tells PEOPLE the LAPD's investigation began in December 2023, following the coroner's report.

TMZ was first to report on the investigation into the source of the ketamine.

Authorities have conducted several interviews but no arrests have been made.

When contacted on Tuesday, the DEA declined to comment and directed PEOPLE to the LAPD for updates.

At the time of his death, Perry was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy, according to the autopsy. A year before his death, he shared in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing about his struggles with addiction.

“I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side again,” he told PEOPLE for a 2022 cover story. “I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober—and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction—to write it all down. I was pretty certain that it would help people if I did.”
