Author James Patterson to make a stop in Des Moines in 2024 during library's AViD series
Meet a literary legend when author James Patterson stops in Des Moines in 2024.
The prolific author best known for introducing the world to detective Alex Cross in “Along Came a Spider” headlines the 2024 Authors Visiting in Des Moines (AViD) series held by the Des Moines Public Library.
Who is James Patterson?
Patterson started his writing career in 1976 with his debut novel, “The Thomas Berryman Number,” and once he developed his Alex Cross character, he went on to write 28 books about the detective.

His long career includes fictional tales of the Women’s Murder Club, Jane Effing Smith, and Maximum Ride, as well as true stories about the Kennedys, John Lennon, Princess Diana, and military heroes, police officers, and ER nurses. He has coauthored best-selling novels with Bill Clinton and Dolly Parton, told the story of his own life in “James Patterson” by James Patterson, and has received an Edgar Award, nine Emmy Awards, the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation, and the National Humanities Medal.

Where can I see James Patterson in Des Moines?
At this event, Patterson will discuss his career and his upcoming nonfiction book, “The Secret Lives of Booksellers and Librarians: True Stories of the Magic of Reading,” which comes out on April 8, 2024. He describes the book as the “real-life stories of people in two professions that Patterson himself calls ‘superheroes.’”
The program will take place at Scottish Rite Consistory, at 519 Park St. in downtown Des Moines, on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 7 p.m.
Admission for AViD is free, and seating is first-come, first-served. Patterson will sign books following the program. A special VIP meet-and-greet will be part of the event as well, with details coming later.
