Australian athletes displayed 'unacceptable behavior' during return flight from Olympics
Some Australian athletes are facing investigations after becoming rowdy and belligerent on a return flight from the Tokyo Olympic games.
7 News reported Australian rugby and soccer players appeared intoxicated on a 10-hour flight that left Tokyo last Thursday and arrived in Sydney the following day.
They reportedly were not wearing masks, were loud and disruptive, failed to respond to requests from flight attendants and raided alcohol stored in the galley of the plane.
“While there has been no formal complaint from the airline, unacceptable behaviour was brought to our attention and I directly raised the issue with our member sports CEOs,” said Australia’s Olympic Committee Chief Matt Carroll in a statement on Tuesday to VICE News.
Carroll told VICE that there were athletes from nine different Australian sports on the flight and that Rugby Australia and Football Australia apologized to their Olympic Team.
“The specifics of who is involved, we still don’t know,” Australia’s Olympic team chef de mission Ian Chesterman told reporters in Tokyo on Wednesday, 7 News reported.
Chesterman said Rugby Australia and Football Australia would decide any sanction and that the athletes had apologized for their actions.
