This year's Grammy nominations are out Austin's Black Pumas are nominees for Best Rock Performance for their song "More Than a Love Song" Friday morning.

The 66th annual Grammy Awards pits the Black Pumas against other bands, including the Artic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Metallica and boygenius. It will be the third year in a row that the band has been nominated in a major Grammy category. In 2021, they were nominated for Record of the Year for their album "Colors" but lost to Lizzo for her record "About Damm Time."

The band had some of their first shows at the South Congress club C-Boys in 2018. That year, American-Statesman music writer Deborah Sengupta Stith wrote one of the first features on the new group, anchored by Adrian Quesada and Eric Burton.

The song up for nomination was included in their newly released sophomore album "Chronicles of a Diamond" which has received wide praise. Sengupta Stith caught up with both Quesada and Burton in the weeks leading up to the release of their album.

"'Chronicles of a Diamond' by Black Pumas will go down in history as one of the defining soul albums of our generation. This is not hyperbole or hometown bias. The album is an obvious Grammy contender for the Austin group who picked up seven nominations for their 2019 self-titled debut (and the deluxe re-release). But beyond that, the 10-track collection contains timeless gems that feel destined to adorn the fabric of American life for years to come," she writes.
