Street safety work begins

The Austin Transportation Department has announced updates on several projects.

Construction crews have broken ground on safer crossings near Wooldridge Elementary School and will soon begin work on Parkfield Drive from Payton Gin Road to Mearns Meadow Boulevard. The changes on Parkfield are the second of three phases of work to improve safety and mobility for everyone that uses this street.

Changes include shortening the crossing distance for people walking or rolling by installing new curb extensions, increasing connectivity by fixing sidewalk gaps and increasing safety by constructing a protected intersection at Parkfield and Payton Gin.

Construction for this phase is expected to be completed in spring 2022. Future work will include bikeway and pedestrian crossing improvements from Rundberg Lane to Mearns Meadow Boulevard.

Library announces ‘Outpost’ exhibit

The Austin Public Library announced its new “Outpost” exhibit, which will run from Saturday through Jan. 14 on the second floor of the Central Library Gallery, 710 W. Cesar Chavez St.

The exhibit presents multi-media objects and imagery lifted from Sara Welch’s self-published comic “Holdouts.” The story peers into an imagined future where there has been relatively no progress on curbing climate change, exploring emotional processing with loss of place and home through the protagonist’s perspective. Welch’s exhibit “Outpost” showcases a reading room installation to envelop readers into the narrative.
