Austin community marks Day of the Dead

Oct. 30—AUSTIN, Minn. — Austin is observing Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a community celebration at Paramount Theatre downtown Austin, Minnesota Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023.

The traditional celebration honors the dead with alters to loved ones, art, community, food and performances.

The event opens with an artist-created ofrenda — the altar honoring the dead— in the Paramount lobby. Food from Alicia Bakery will also be served, Let's Face It face painting artist Claire Bliese will offer face painting. A dance performance by Los Chinelos de Morelos is at 7 p.m. followed by live music by Los Rebeldes of Minnesota.

Interpreting services for Spanish and English will be provided by Parenting Resource Center's The Welcome Center.

LTS Brewing is hosting a handmade market to usher in the holiday season. Wares for sale will come from makers including Pletta Apiaries, My Sunshine Crochet Co., CLZens Woodworking, Trail Creek Coffee Roasters and Made New Creative. Also at the market will be a DIY gift wrapping station, themed drinks such as an alcoholic warm apple cider, and samples of a collaboration between LTS and Trail Creek Coffee with a coffee infused beer.

LANESBORO, Minn. — Sylvan Brewing in Lanesboro, Minnesota, is bringing back Flannel Fest after a one year hiatus.

The event coincides with the release of the brewery's Red Flannel smoky red ale and live music by Barb & Tom Schramm at 2 p.m. and the Slapdash Duo at 6 p.m. Driftless Trading Post will be at the event to serve food. Sylvan will also be releasing its new red buffalo check Sylvan flannels for the event.

ROCHESTER — The C-O-X Trio is holding its debut concert performance Sunday. Musicians Kathleen Covalt, on violin; John Osborn, on cello; and Tianyao Xie, on piano will perform pieces including Beethoven's famous "Ghost Trio" and Dvorak's beloved "Dumky Trio."

Multimedia artist originally from Goa now living in Minneapolis, Roshan Ganu, will speak about her current multimedia installation at the Rochester Art Center, "Ja-tra: A Feeling At The Beginning Of Time." Ganu will discuss how she uses various grades of light, darkness and moving images to explore our human condition.

The Rochester Branch of the NAACP is hosting its annual Freedom Fund Banquet.

The chapter's event will echo the National NAACP's 2023 theme of thriving together. It will focus on how people thrive together in Rochester bringing community leaders, activists and experts of all ages together to build a brighter future for everyone.

LAKE CITY, Minn. — The annual Doe Day celebration of the opening of deer season brings businesses, restaurants and makers together in downtown Lake City, Minnesota, each year. This year's event opens 10 a.m. Saturday at various locations in downtown Lake City.
