August is a great time to visit the Newport Art Museum

August is a great time to visit the Newport Art Museum. With new exhibitions on display throughout, all the galleries are activated with exciting and diverse artworks that will delight and inspire art lovers of all ages and experiences.

In the Cushing Gallery, Bob Dilworth: Backyard, draws on the memories and experiences from the artist’s life in Providence and home of Lawrenceville, 50 miles south of Richmond, Virginia. This exhibition features past works of art and new ones being shown for the first time. It’s one of the most comprehensive exhibitions of this very important American artist.

Ana Flores: Shaman Ladders, features selections from two powerful series by the artist: “Forest Dialogue” and the more recent “Oral Histories.” These poetic works of art evoke the complex ecology and history of two places where the artist spends time, the forest next to her studio in Charlestown and the Nova Scotian shore. All of the works begin with the materials she finds in these landscapes.

The artists and designers featured in "Dress Code," explore the ways in which dressing the body with clothing codes oneself and ask who holds the authority to determine these codes. By breaking the “norms” of dress, the artists in this exhibition present their bodies and selves on their own terms.

Farm to Table on view in the Second Floor Corridor Gallery, features permanent collection works from the 17th century to the present that emphasizes our close connection to food. Here, artists look at the ways we produce and consume food, even the gendered associations tied to cooking and domesticity. Through these artworks, viewers can sample a taste of the environmental and social ingredients that go into (and beyond) what we put on the table.

Located in the Museum School, Stephen Mol: Children of the Gods, features work by Stephen Moi, a resident artist at Outsider Collective at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. A worldbuilder engaged in the creation of a personal mythology, Moi’s complex, colorful illustrations depict events which exist in the realm of the imagination, centering around the adventures of a Valkyrie and a Chicken-headed warrior as they quest throughout the cosmos. The Newport Art Museum School is honored to feature select illustrations from this epic work-in-progress. Moi’s work will inspire the Sept. 9, Wake and Create, the Museum's creative Saturday program for children ages 4-10 and their families.
