Netflix is dipping its toe into the AI discourse with its brand-new Sci-Fi film produced by and starring J-Lo, directed by Brad Peyton (Rampage, San Andreas).

ATLAS, written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, follows a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.

J-Lo leads the film alongside co-stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla and Mark Strong. She says she was drawn to the film because she "loved that this is a big sci-fi action movie, but at its core, it's a story of friendship — and a love story, in a way."

"The first time I read the script I sobbed," she said.

J-Lo said she's a big fan of the genre and drew an unexpected comparison between ATLAS and a beloved classic. "This film reminds me of King Kong in a way," she said. "You have this big monster — in our movie it's an AI robot, of course — taking care of this woman and teaching her tenderness."

This feels present in the first trailer, which leans into the genre with its aesthetic and explosive action scenes but also features vulnerability from J-Lo's character of Atlas Shepherd.

"We talked a lot about Sigourney Weaver's character as we were making this movie because this is kind of a one-woman show for so much of the movie. It's just me in that cockpit, traversing the galaxy," J-Lo said.

Viewers will get to see J-Lo in action next month when ATLAS becomes available to stream on Netflix from May 24.
