Atiana De La Hoya reveals how her mom Shanna Moakler inspires her beauty routine

Atiana De La Hoya is forming her own relationship with makeup these days, but she can always use a few beauty pointers from her mom, Shanna Moakler.

While chatting with PEOPLE at the launch party of her “Beauty Without Bunnies” campaign with PETA in Calabasas, California, she shared how the women in her life, particularly the ‘90s mainstay, have influenced her outlook on glam.

“My mom and my grandma, for sure, have given me more beauty advice than I could probably remember. [My mom] was always so into doing her makeup,” De La Hoya recalls of her former pageant model mom, 49. “Growing up, I'd sit and watch her and just all of the little tips and tricks [she did], because she knew all the good [ones] from the '90s and early 2000s.”

But, over the years, De La Hoya has arrived at a few beauty-related realizations on her own too. For example, she’s leaning into the “less is more” philosophy to feel her most authentic self. She’s also stripping back her routine by being selective about what cosmetic products she uses, which led her to her partnership with PETA.

“I have bunnies and they're my entire world. I'm obsessed with them. I was doing my makeup one day, and they were running around my feet, and I just realized that a lot of the makeup that we use is tested on animals,” De La Hoya tells PEOPLE of what sparked her work with the organization. “There's so many different spaces that they're present in and there's so much outreach and so much education, which I think is really important. That's something I really admire about them.”

On Friday, De La Hoya celebrated a second milestone — hitting her mid-20s.

“I try not to set expectations or goals and give myself a lot of grace. I just want it to be a fun, good year,” she says of turning 25 on Friday.

When it comes to self-love, De La Hoya says she tries her hardest to treat herself with kindness, even when, on some days, that may seem hard to do. “I've never looked at someone and been like, they're looking awful today, or I've never judged someone the way that I judge myself so harshly. I feel like that's a really good reminder to not think about it too much because no one really cares.”
