Firefighters treated two people for smoke inhalation and rescued two cats after a fire ignited Wednesday in a house on South Milledge Avenue.

The fire was contained to one bedroom in the house that was separated into rental units, but smoke and some water damage occurred in other rooms and upstairs, according to Athens-Clarke County Fire Capt. Nate Moss.

The fire was reported at 5:09 p.m. and the first unit arrived within a minute as the fire department was in close proximity to the location, according to Moss.

Two residents were treated at the scene by firefighters for smoke inhalation, but one was transported by ambulance to a hospital, Moss said. That person was later released.

The smoke extended into rooms on the second floor, where two cats were found.

“The cats were treated with oxygen and are fine,” Moss said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and investigators returned to the location on Thursday, Moss said.
