ADRIAN — Athena Aid had its 53rd event on Dec. 1 with close to 150 local women attending to support Athena Lenawee's mission to inspire, develop and celebrate women’s leadership.

Athena Lenawee hosts Athena Aid events two or three times a year, and 100% of the proceeds go toward mini-grants and scholarships for programs and services that directly impact local women and girls, a news release said.

During this event, Athena also collected personal care items that will be distributed to local organizations.

The event was at the Hills of Lenawee Golf Club and Banquet Center in Adrian. It was sponsored by Old National Bank.

"Many businesses and individuals gave us over 50 door prizes to share with the attendees who spent this wonderful evening having fun and networking," the release said.

Athena Lenawee started in 2007 when Julie Koehn, Licia Willnow and two other like-minded women saw a need to help women who are not able to get assistance through normal channels, the release said. Today, the Athena Lenawee council consists of 12 volunteer members to help continue the organization's mission and awareness.

"We are proud to have shared over $10,000 as a hand-up to local women," the release said.

Athena Lenawee also hosts an annual awards banquet to recognize local businesses and individuals who inspire, develop and celebrate women.
