Astros tie franchise record with 12th straight win on Alex Bregman walk-off

With a franchise record on the line, the Houston Astros decided to make things dramatic. After reeling off 11-straight wins, the team trailed the Tampa Bay Rays by one run heading into the ninth inning.

By the time the night was over, they had tied the record. The team pulled off an incredible walk-off win to get there.

What happened?

With the Astros trailing by a run with one out in the ninth, Alex Bregman stepped to the plate looking to be the hero. On the third pitch of the at-bat, he smacked a line drive that landed in between the left fielder and center fielder.

Marwin Gonzalez trotted in from third to tie things up. Max Stassi easily made it home from second to score the game-winning run. It was a nail-biter, but the Astros managed a 5-4 comeback win. Bregman got it done with the game on the line.

Franchise record tied

The win gave the Astros 12-straight victories. That ties the team’s franchise record for consecutive wins. That record was set by the 2004 Astros.

How much has the streak helped?

Before the streak started, the Astros trailed the Seattle Mariners in the American League West by two games. They now lead Seattle by two games in the division. It’s not as though the Mariners have completely fallen off, either. They’ve gone 9-3 since the Astros started their streak. That’s a tough way to lose the division lead.

What’s next for Houston?

The Astros will go for their franchise-record 13th straight win Tuesday night against the Rays. They’ll be in good shape with Justin Verlander on the mound. It won’t be easy, though. The Rays will throw Blake Snell, who has taken a big step forward in 2018.
