Sep. 20—ANDERSON — Anderson Symphony Orchestra will be kicking off its 56th season Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with a bang.

Audiences at the Paramount Theatre will rise to their feet as the ASO plays the national anthem.

In keeping with a patriotic feel, the program will shift to "1812 Overture" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The piece supposedly was intended commemorate Russia's defense against France. It was first performed in 1882 for a ceremony dedicating the Cathedral of Christ The Savior, according to "Tchaikovsky: A Listener's Guide."

The overture is often performed at Independence Day celebrations in the United States, said ASO Music Director Richard Sowers.

Other numbers include "Fantasia on La Sonnambula," "Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Hoe-down."

ASO Members such as Amanda Baer (lay leader/concertmaster) Rebecca Chappell (principal clarinetist), Joe Everett (principal bass) and John Huntoon (principal trombone) will performs solos.

Having four soloists, Sowers said, is unusual — orchestra concerts tend to have one soloist, usually someone from outside the orchestra.

Chappell and several other ASO musicians have been under Sowers' direction throughout his career as ASO. Such folks will be recognized via the concert programs.

Executive Director Darla Sallee said such longevity attests to Sowers' leadership and the strength of the ASO.
