Asian Video Player Hooq Launches in Singapore
Asian video streaming service Hooq finally launched in Singapore, its home country, last week.
Backed by Singtel, Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures Television, the service launched in early 2015 and is already operational in The Philippines, Indonesia, India and Thailand.
The Singapore launch is done in partnership with Singtel and will cost customers US$6.28 (S$8.98) per month. The telecoms provider will also offer 1GB of streaming to pre-paid mobile customers for US4.98 (S$7) per month and it plans to offer other bundles to its cellular subscribers
Hooq is a latecomer compared with Netflix and Catchplay which both launched in Singapore earlier this year – the latter in partnership with Singtel’s infrastructure rival StarHub. StarHub also has its own streaming service in Singapore, StarHub Go, and PCCW’s Viu is also active in the country. Amazon Prime Video is rumored to launch in Sinagpore next year.
Across Asia, Hooq claims some three million registered users. Iflix, part of the Catcha Group and heavily backed by the U.K. pay-TV group Sky, is operational in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and The Philippines.
