New Asian market coming to Providence. What to expect from Maruichi Japanese Food & Deli

An Asian food emporium is coming to Providence with rows of grocery items as well as prepared foods, including sushi, drinks and sweets.

Maruichi Japanese Food & Deli will open this spring at 113 Washington St., in the space Rory's Market occupied for a year before closing last October.

At Maruichi, shoppers will find the familiar along with the exotic. They will carry Japanese grocery items, a mix of staples, home goods and packaged foodstuffs as well as fresh sushi-grade fish and Japanese cuts of meat. Prepared foods will include onigiri, sushi and sashimi, bento boxes, seaweed salads and other specialties from Japanese cuisine.

The in-store café will serve Japanese snacks, matcha lattes and Japanese coffee and teas, according to a news release.

The grocery chain is part of Fuji Mart Corp. which is based in Stamford, Connecticut. They opened their first market in 1991 in Connecticut. They have since expanded to New Jersey and Massachusetts, where they have two locations in Brookline and one in Arlington. The Providence location is their first in Rhode Island.

The market is known for its special occasion foods for events such as Lunar New Year and Hinamatsuri (Girl's or Doll's Day), a Japanese festival celebrated on March 3. During these celebrations, the store imports sashimi from Tokyo’s famous Toyosu Market and Miyazaki Wagyu beef.

The shop will be open seven days a week. No date of opening has been shared.
