Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have released a video statement addressing the character letters they wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson prior to his sentencing for the rape of two women.

“We are aware of the pain that has been caused by the character letters they we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson,” Kutcher said to begin the video. “A couple months ago, Danny’s family reached out to us and asked us to write character letters to represent the person that we knew for 25 years so that the judge could take that into full consideration relative to sentencing.”

“The letters were not written to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or the validity of the jury’s ruling,” Kunis stated.

“They were intended for the judge and not to undermine the testimony of the victims or traumatize them in anyway,” Kutcher added. “We’re sorry if that has taken place.”

“Our heart goes out to every single person who has ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse, or rape,” Kunis said to conclude the video.

Kutcher and Kunis, who co-starred with Masterson on That 70’s Show, were among 50 people who wrote wrote letters of support for Masterson after he was found guilty in May of two counts of forcible rape. In his, Kutcher praised Masterson for setting “an extraordinary standard” for treating others. Meanwhile, Kunis called Masterson an “outstanding role model and friend.”

Masterson was ultimately sentenced to 30-years-to-life in prison.
