Ashton Kutcher suffered from a debilitating flare-up of vasculitis three years ago that impaired his sight, hearing, and ability to walk, leaving him “lucky to be alive.”

The That ’70s Show star revealed his medical struggle in an upcoming episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge. In a preview clip, Kutcher spoke about his struggles with the autoimmune disease. “I had this weird, super-rare form of vasculitis that like, knocked out my vision, and knocked out my hearing, and knocked out all my equilibrium. It took me like a year to build it all back up,” he said.

“You don’t really appreciate it until it’s gone,” he continued, “Until you go, ‘I don’t know if I’m ever gonna be able to see again. I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to hear again, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to walk again.'”

“I’m lucky to be alive,” he added.

There are many forms of vasculitis, but the disease is characterized by inflammation of the blood vessels. Some are more rare than others, and some are more dangerous; Ghostbusters writer and Caddyshack director Harold Ramis had to painstakingly relearn to walk after getting struck with the disease. Following a recovery, he suffered a relapse and died in 2014.

As the Running Wild clip began to make the rounds, Kutcher took to social media to assuage his fans’ fears. “Before there are a bunch of rumors/ chatter/ whatever out there. Yes, I had a rare vasculitis episode 3yrs ago. (Autoimmune flair up),” he wrote. “I had some impairments hear, vision, balance issues right after. I fully recovered. All good. Moving on. See you at the 2022 NY Marathon w/Thorn.”

After an eight-year absence, Kutcher recently returned to the silver screen in B.J. Novak’s Vengeance. In June he skewered celebrity sing-alongs on The Boys, and he’ll make guest appearances on Netflix’s forthcoming sequel series, That ’90s Show.
