Ashton Kutcher may be regretting writing a letter in support of former That ’70s Show co-star Danny Masterson after he was convicted of rape. It sounds like he’s trying to find a way to repair his image, and as quickly as possible.

Kutcher, along with wife Mila Kunis, likely thought the letters would not see the light of day and would remain under seal. However, Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo had other thoughts and released the documents, revealing Kutcher and Kunis’ perplexing words of praise for someone who was convicted of raping two former members of the Church of Scientology. The judge had no time for any nonsense in the case and blasted Masterson during his 30-year sentencing.

You were not convicted based on rumors, innuendo, gossip and speculation,” Judge Olemdo told Masterson. “You were convicted based on evidence that 12 people in the community found to be credible. … You were convicted because each of the victims reported the rapes to someone shortly after the rapes occurred.” With the judge’s harsh words, it was not surprising that Kutcher’s character letter was made public.

Now, Kutcher reportedly wants to return to the public eye while letting his disappointed fans know that he understands why they are upset. “Ashton is desperate to dig his reputation out of the dirt,” a source told The National Enquirer, via RadarOnline. “He wants people to be aware he KNOWS he made a mistake!” The 45-year-old actor feels terrible that he made the choice to stand by Masterson because it’s “the height of Hollywood hypocrisy to claim to be a champion of those who’ve been sexually abused while supporting an abuser.”

A second insider thinks his comeback is going to be harder than he thinks, noting, “I don’t know how he — or Mila — are ever going to recover from this.” It’s going to take a long time for the public to forget this major infraction, and Kutcher is going to have to realize that it’s a long road to forgiveness.
