Her First Child

Supermodel Ashley Graham and her husband Justin Irvine welcomed their first child, a boy, on January 18th. Graham posted about the birth on her Instagram story on Monday, but is saving the baby pics for a later date. She wrote:

"At 6:00pm on Saturday our lives changed for the better. Thank you for all your love and support during this incredible time."

She announced two months ago on The Ellen Show that she and Irvine were expecting a boy and has been documenting her pregnancy ups and down on Instagram.

She Spoke About Body Positivity During Pregnancy

Graham, who has long been at the forefront of the body positivity movement, was open about the struggles that women face with accepting their bodies, particularly when pregnant. She said earlier this month:

"I feel like we all have complicated relationships with our body. Mine has been changing in some new and interesting ways. It hasn’t been easy to embrace my pregnant body, but it’s definitely a reminder of how awesome our bodies truly are."

She also opened up about the fact that being pregnant makes her model profession a bit tricky.

"Nothing fits me. I texted my stylist and I said, I need a fitting. I just need five key pieces."

Graham usually comes up when people talk about increasing body diversity in fashion, and while she wishes things were more inclusive, she is willing to keep having the same conversation.

"I think that being in my position, I’m going to always talk about it. I don’t feel any negativity towards it. And I’ll [talk about it] until we don’t have to have this conversation."

Let's Talk About Sex

Graham also got candid about the difficulties of having sex while married, sharing the frustrations that she and her husband had. A pregnant belly can often hinder intimacy, and "with pregnancy, things have been really different" for Graham and Irvine.

"I feel like every relationship goes in waves of sex. You’re like, 'Hey, do we need to plan this?'

There’s this huge bulge that can be sensitive if you lay on it or go into a new position. I’ve been literally asking every single one of my friends who have had babies or who’re pregnant, like, ‘What positions do you guys do?’ This has to be a normal conversation among mothers."

Still Feels Better Than Ever

Despite all of the difficulty of pregnancy, Graham was still super positive about the experience of bringing life into the world. She explained on Instagram:

"Throughout my pregnancy so far I’ve gained 50lbs. And the best part is, I don’t care! I have never felt better, and I am so thankful that my body and son have allowed me to be as mobile and flexible as I have been. Between working out, yoga, acupuncture and lymphatic massages - I finally feel like I figured out this whole pregnancy thing and how to feel my best."

She told Ellen DeGeneres that she felt like being honest on Instagram was her way of helping other moms and their struggles.

"The reason I posted that photo was because I’d just announced I was pregnant and I thought then that I was going to feel good and I didn’t, I just felt terrible. This is a new body I’m walking into, why don’t I just put myself out there with this new body? I feel so isolated and so alone, so I’ve had to come into this new world of body confidence."

Here's hoping Graham brings a similar inspiring transparency to parenthood!
