Asbury Park rapper Big Boss Noff goes for the win on new single 'Hit a Lick'

Are you ready for your big win?

Asbury Park rapper Big Boss Noff is on your side with his new single, “Hit a Lick.” The track is out this week.

“When I say hit a lick, I don't mean it in a negative way,” said Noff, aka James McKnight. “Everybody wants to make that big come up. Everybody wants that big win right now. I'm trying to make sure everybody is motivated for that big win right now.”

It's hard not to hum the line “I'm just trying to hit a lick — and stay fly” after you hear the track. Noff raises the cadence at the end of the line, and the listener is on their way. The song is produced by JusKev and mixed by Mixedbyrey.

“I want to be that change,” Noff said. “I want to be the man who forwards the culture. I'm coming with something completely different, especially from what everybody is expecting to hear, or from what they've been hearing. I want to win and I want everybody to win.”

Noff, who opened for the late PnB Rock at Asbury Lanes last year, has been bringing it to city stages in recent weeks. He performed at a mental health awareness concert at Springwood Avenue Park, as well as at The Asbury hotel, and at an industry mixer at the GotPicz Studio on Third Avenue hosted by the city's 1308 Enterprise group.

He's looking to connect with music fans in all parts of the city.

“Outside of hip-hop, I'm working on pop songs and different genres of music,” Noff said. “I'm working with live bands to get across the tracks because we know what the west side of the city is, but the east side is whole different realm. If I get over there with personality or giving them what they're looking for and still be myself, that's a win in itself.”

We Can Survive concert

Maroon 5, OneRepublic, Kelly Clarkson and more will play the “We Can Survive” concert, a benefit for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Prudential Center in Newark.

The show, which has previously included Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Billie Eilish, the Jonas Brothers, Alanis Morrisette, Harry Styles and Shawn Mendes, sets down in Newark after a nine-year run in Los Angeles.

It's part of the Audacy media's ongoing I’m Listening mental health initiative.

“We Can Survive has captivated audiences over the past decade with its unforgettable performances, chart-topping artists and unwavering commitment to uniting listeners through the power of music,” said Michael Martin, senior vice president of programming and head of music initiatives for Audacy, in a statement. “The decision to move the concert from Los Angeles to the New York City area is a testament to the event's growth and its goal of reaching a wider audience. We look forward to connecting with our fans on the East Coast in October.”

More artists are expected to be announced. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Ticketmaster.com.
