Artists sought for Yuba City Mural Marathon

Feb. 2—There's an empty wall along Church Street in Yuba City and Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture is looking to have it filled — with murals.

Five professional mural artists are being sought to create these murals which will appear on the south side of the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts. Each mural will be 21'x21' in size, as permitted by the building's precisely framed sections.

As part of the Yuba City Mural Marathon, artists will only have 48 hours to complete their project from start to finish. This mural marathon is being done in collaboration with the Yuba Sutter Rotary Night Club, the Blue Zones Project, and the Partnership for Health, Equity and Inclusion with grant funding from the Upstate California Creative Corps (UCCC).

To bring further awareness to Creative Corps' four program goals, the Mural Marathon will take place during a larger event that includes an adjacent art and health festival. In consideration of this, artists must incorporate one or more of the following themes into their mural designs: — Public health awareness messages, such as mitigating the spread of COVID-19 — Public awareness of environment-related issues, such as water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, and emergency preparedness, relief, and recovery — Civic engagement, such as election participation — Social justice and community engagement

The Mural Marathon will begin at 4 p.m. on April 19 with "brushes down" at 4 p.m. on April 21. Winners will be announced that same day between 5-5:30 p.m. Each artist chosen to participate will receive $5,000. Once completed, judges will award additional prize money. First place will earn $3,000, second place $2,500, and third place $1,500.
