Art exhibitions upcoming at ISU

Nov. 13—The uncertain tension between the desire to relate and the actualization of a relationship is the focus of Christopher's Schneberger's photography exhibition "Liminal Connections," scheduled for November and December in Yang Family University Art Gallery at Indiana State University.

The exhibition is scheduled to run Nov. 27 through Dec. 15. Also planned is a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 30, which includes an artist talk from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

All ISU art gallery exhibitions and talks are free and open to the public.

In terms of Schneberger's "Liminal Connections," it is described as, contrary to interdependence, the whisper of loneliness isolates people from self and others while simultaneously evoking a longing for interpersonal connection, according to a gallery news release. In "Liminal Connections," the uncertain tension between one's desire to relate and the actualization of relationship thematically connects Schneberger's two tonally contrasted digital photographic series: "The Wanderers" and "Glimmer: The Haunting of the Graham House."

While the Scouts in "The Wanderers" seek to relate with one another, the land and self, the Graham House family in "Glimmer" expresses their individual striving for connection with the ghost of a young woman, and vice versa. Serving as connective tissue between these two narrative projects are selected works from Spaces which includes various series that illustrate liminal space through interior, urban, and rural imagery. These immersive narratives encourage the viewer to find comfort and respite in the ambiguity of connection, the news release said.

Schneberger is a Chicago-based photographer and educator who has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His work has been in numerous exhibitions including at the Annenberg Space in Los Angeles, Dorsky Projects in New York City, and Blank Wall Gallery in Athens. His work is in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, the Taubman Museum, and the Block Museum. He is assistant professor of photography at Vincennes University. He holds a BFA from the University of Florida, and an MFA from Indiana University.

Also upcoming at ISU is a senior exhibition by artists Sarah Bond, Ti'Mair McMullan and James White, scheduled for Nov. 27 through Dec. 16 in Turman Gallery in the ISU Fine Arts Building.

A reception is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 7, including a 4:30 p.m. ceremony.

The exhibition showcases the artwork of the graduating BFA and BA students from the Department of Art and Design. Each work displayed encapsulates the knowledge, skills and techniques that these students have gained throughout their years at ISU. This culmination point and celebration together signify their "rite of passage" into their next chosen path, according to a gallery news release.
