Though he hasn’t held public office since 2011, that doesn’t mean the “Governator” isn’t still invested in the political landscape. Arnold Schwarzenegger discussed Donald Trump in a new interview with Men’s Health, and he left little doubt about whether he’s paying close attention to the current administration. As for why the sitting president has targeted him in recent years, Schwarzenegger offered a simple — albeit surprising — explanation: Trump is “in love with” him.

It’s been nearly a decade since Schwarzenegger left the California governor’s office. And it’s been two years since he stepped down as replacement host of The Celebrity Apprentice on NBC. But Schwarzenegger is still occasionally lampooned by Trump for both roles, with the POTUS ridiculing the show for receiving low ratings. But why is Trump holding a grudge against Schwarzenegger? “I think he really — he’s in love with me. That’s the reality of it,” Schwarzenegger told Men’s Health, adding, “With Trump, he wants to be me.”

Schwarzenegger also admits that part of the reason he finds fault with Trump’s presidency is that he can relate to it in a way, saying, “I always complain about Trump not being able to shift from Trump to president. Well, the reason why I say this is because I saw that with myself, that I was not able to shift from Arnold to governor.”

According to Schwarzenegger, being a leader on such a large scale in politics means you have to be able to get out of your own way. “I was still stuck as Arnold. Arnold always gets things done. I forced my way in there, then I do it and do it and do it and do it, until it gets done. And I felt the same thing I can do with politics,” he said. “But I learned quickly that that’s really not the way it works. You got to be able to bring people together. It takes much more time, much more effort, but that’s just the way it is. If you don’t like that, don’t get into politics.”

That wasn’t the only dive into Trump’s mentality that Schwarzenegger took, either. In the interview, he offered an interesting glimpse into the president’s psyche. Years back, Trump was apparently fascinated by Schwarzenegger’s physicality (although, Schwarzenegger noted, “I don’t think he fears me”). At wrestling matches and other events, Trump would pepper Schwarzenegger with questions. “He asked me, ‘How do you do that, with the movies? I mean, it’s so believable.’ He drilled down to specific questions that fascinated him. It was about ‘How do you sell something?’ Like, a scene. ‘How do you go and act out a scene so that I get affected emotionally?’ He was fascinated by that. ‘How do you do this when you do interviews – that you penetrate through it and you then are totally believable?’ ”

Regardless of how Schwarzenegger feels about Trump’s presidency or Trump’s perceived obsession with him, the actor isn’t worried about the POTUS’ effect on the country. “People everywhere, no matter how much they dump on America, no matter how much people laugh at Trump right now all over the world — they want to come to America,” said Schwarzenegger, who became a U.S. citizen in 1983. “Because they know that one president, one man, cannot change this country.”
