Armie Hammer drops out of movie after social media controversy

Armie Hammer has dropped out of upcoming movie Shotgun Wedding, which he was shortly due to begin filming with Jennifer Lopez, following a social media controversy.
The actor's departure from the Lionsgate action-comedy film comes after unverified explicit messages purported to be linked to Hammer were shared on social media.
The actor has disputed the legitimacy of the messages, announcing in a statement shared by The Wrap: "I'm not responding to these bulls*** claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I'm grateful to them for that."

The Wrap reports that Hammer's role will now be recast, with a production spokesperson saying: "Given the imminent start date of Shotgun Wedding, Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision."
Shotgun Wedding focuses on a couple who decide to host an extravagant destination wedding, only for their outspoken families to get taken hostage by criminals. The pair, who are no longer sure they want to go through with the wedding, team up to save their families, putting a new perspective on their relationship.
Ryan Reynolds is among the movie's executive producers, while Jason Moore is due to direct. Amazon Prime Video has picked up the rights to show the movie in a number of territories, including the UK.
Hammer has previously taken on a number of high-profile roles, including those of twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network, John Reid in The Lone Ranger and Oliver in Call Me by Your Name.

He recently played the mysterious widower Maxim de Winter in Netflix's adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel Rebecca opposite Lily James and he will soon appear in Kenneth Branagh's mystery thriller Death on the Nile as Simon Doyle.
Based on Agatha Christie's novel, the story will see renowned Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) attempt to solve the murder of one of the passengers on the SS Karnak, before the killer strikes again.
