Armie Hammer breaks social media silence to post puzzling clip from 1968 movie

Embattled actor Armie Hammer returned to Instagram with a mystifying clip of Frank Perry's 1968 surrealist drama The Swimmer.

The Call Me by Your Name star, 37, shared an Instagram video on Wednesday of someone (presumably himself) aboard a train watching a scene featuring Burt Lancaster's character, Ned Merrill, running shirtless alongside a horse. Hammer did not caption the cryptic post and the rest of his feed has been scrubbed.

A representative for Hammer didn't immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

Based on John Cheever's 1964 New Yorker short story of the same name, The Swimmer follows Lancaster's eccentric Ned as he drops by a pool party thrown by old friends in an affluent Connecticut suburb. When he observes that a series of backyard swimming pools form a route back to his house, Ned decides to swim his way home. Along the way, he encounters several people from his past before arriving home to an empty dwelling in disrepair. It also stars Janet Landgard, Tony Bickley, Janice Rule, and comedian Joan Rivers in her film debut as an actress.

Hammer has largely remained out of the spotlight since he and ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers settled their divorce in June. The actor became embroiled in controversy in 2021 after he was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, who shared messages allegedly sent by Hammer pertaining to BDSM and cannibalistic desires. As a result, Hammer — who has denied all allegations of abuse — was dropped by his agency and various TV and film projects. He was recently the subject of three-part docuseries House of Hammer, which delved into the allegations and his family history.

In the wake of the allegations, Los Angeles police identified Hammer as a suspect of an investigation into an alleged 2017 rape and presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, which opted not to file sexual assault charges against the actor earlier this year following what had been described as a "thorough review" by prosecutors.
