Arlene Dickinson gets real about aging: 'Underneath the grey is a person'

Arlene Dickinson isn't letting age define her worth.

Earlier this week, the 65-year-old entrepreneur took to Instagram to share a selfie alongside a detailed message about aging and beauty.

In the black and white photo, the "Dragons' Den" investor smiled at the camera, with a table filled with makeup behind her. To take the snap, the mother-of-four straightened her shoulder-length hair and wore a floral long-sleeve blouse.

In the caption, Dickinson began by opening up about her signature hairstyle.

"I’ve spent a good portion of my life being recognized by my hair. Known for my grey streak, my hair became something of a personal trademark. Fact is I’d much rather be known for my expertise instead of my appearance," she revealed.

Dickinson further discussed the difference between men and women aging in society.

"As women begin to age, we’re often viewed as somehow less 'desirable' in the eyes of society. Grey hair becomes an indicator of age instead of self-expression. We’re constantly told we need to 'maintain' our outward youthful appearance (at all costs) in order to be found attractive," she said. "Unlike our male counterparts, we aren’t supposed to age naturally and don’t get to wear the passage of time as a mantle to be respected."

The author ended her post with an uplifting message about the connection between age and confidence.

"Aging is a privilege and with each passing year we gain more confidence, skills, self-awareness and have more to offer. Underneath the grey is a person with real life experiences, full of insight and wisdom that can never be taught or replaced," Dickinson concluded.

In the comments, fans thanked Dickinson for her honest message and praised her "timeless" look.
