Arizona's Khalil Tate sets single-game rushing record for QBs
Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate broke former Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch’s single-game rushing record for QBs in the Wildcats’ 45-42 upset win over Colorado.
Tate ran for 327 yards, six more than Lynch ran for on Nov. 26, 2013 against Western Michigan. Lynch needed 27 carries in that game to beat his previous mark of 316 yards.
Saturday night, Tate — who didn’t even open the game as Arizona’s starter — needed just 14 carries. Yes, 14. And four of those carries went for touchdowns.
He ran for a 58-yard score on Arizona’s second possession of the game and had a 28-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter. He had a 47-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter and then ran 75 yards for a TD on Arizona’s following possession.
Tate, a four-star recruit and the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2016 according to Rivals, replaced starting quarterback Brandon Dawkins on Arizona’s first possession after Dawkins left the game because of an injury.
Tate broke Lynch’s record with about two minutes to go in the fourth quarter on a 31-yard run. The third-down carry gave Arizona a first down and allowed the Wildcats to run out the clock and preserve the win.
He was also a very efficient 11-12 passing for 142 yards and a touchdown.
The win pushes Arizona to 3-2 overall and to 1-1 in the Pac-12. The three wins in 2017 matches the Wildcats’ win total from all of 2016 and we’re going to guess that coach Rich Rodriguez is going to have a very tough choice to make at QB when Dawkins is healthy enough to play again.
