Could Arizona State be going from Todd Graham to Herm Edwards?

The former New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs coach and current ESPN analyst is going to interview for the Sun Devils head coaching position over the weekend.

Edwards, 63, would be quite the outside-the-box hire for Arizona State, an athletic department that wasn’t satisfied after a 7-5 season in 2017. Graham was fired Sunday, a day after the Sun Devils beat in-state rival Arizona for the Territorial Cup.

Athletic director Ray Anderson said at the press conference announcing the decision that he wanted to keep the team’s assistant coaches. Billy Napier, a former Alabama assistant, is the team’s offensive coordinator while former Baylor assistant Phil Bennett is the team’s defensive coordinator. Both coordinators joined the program before the 2017 season.

If Edwards was to be ASU’s new coach, he wouldn’t have an existing college coaching staff to bring with him. Perhaps he would be amenable to keeping Arizona State’s current staff intact.

Edwards hasn’t coached since 2008 and hasn’t been a college coach since 1989, his final season as defensive backs coach for San Jose State. He left the school after that season to become a scout for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Edwards was hired as the Jets head coach in 2001 and spent five seasons with the team. After he was fired following the 2005 season, he became the head coach of the Chiefs from 2006-08. In eight seasons as an NFL head coach Edwards compiled a career record of 54-74.
