Emma Stone, from Scottsdale, won the Academy Award for best actress Sunday for her brilliantly unhinged performance in "Poor Things."

It was Stone's second Oscar for best actress. She also won in 2017 for "La La Land."

And she was characteristically endearing about the whole thing.

"My dress is broken," she said as she accepted the award. "I think it happened during 'I'm Just Ken.'"

She continued: "Oh boy, this is really overwhelming. My voice is also a little gone. Whatever."

It was something of an upset, if only a little; Lily Gladstone was considered a slight favorite going in for her performance in "Killers of the Flower Moon." Stone recognized Gladstone from the stage.

"Lily, I share this with you," Stone said. "I'm in awe of you."

Stone played Bella Baxter in "Poor Things," Yorgos Lanthimos' wild film about a woman (Stone) with a baby's brain in an adult body who grows into herself, literally and figuratively. She called it "the gift of a lifetime," and she's not wrong. It's an amazing performance, the kind of everything everywhere all at once that Academy voters find either stunning or off-putting.

The race was essentially between Stone and Gladstone, whose quiet, powerful performance in "Killers of the Flower Moon" was the polar opposite of Stone's — but equally worthy.

Among the many people Stone thanked was her daughter, who she said turns 3 in three days. "I love you bigger than the whole sky, my love," Stone said. It was breathtakingly sweet.

And then, walking off, said, "Don't look at the back of my dress."

Perfect.
