Universal has officially released the first trailer for the beloved Broadway musical film adaptation, Wicked. Starring Ariana Grande as the titular Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the official three and a half minute long trailer sees the duo sing famous anthems like "Popular" and "Defying Gravity."

Theater lovers can catch a glimpse of the upcoming prequel to The Wizard of Oz in the trailer, giving fans a look at the events that happened before Dorothy made the choice to hit the yellow brick road and Elphaba was shunned for her green skin, becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. A story that is rooted in an unlikely friendship, later turned rivalry between Elphaba and Glinda, the trailer gives audiences a glimpse of that journey. Elphaba and Glindsa first met as classmates at Shiz University. The trailer begins by asking the crucial question, "Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?" Setting the tone for the plot, the trailer follows Elphaba as she meets her roommate Glinda and is gifted a signature black which hat. Elphaba harnesses her powers and she travels to the Emerald City to face the Wizard, played by Jeff Goldblum. Trouble begins to brew as the Oz plots to turn citizens against Elphaba, "The best way to bring folks together is to give ’em a really good enemy." Elphaba later counters and says, "It's the Wizard who should be afraid of me."

The Wicked film adaptation is directed by Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians. Michelle Yeoh plays Shiz University headmaster Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq and Bowen Yang as Pfannee. The film arrives in two parts, with the first installment releasing on November 27, 2024 and the sequel on December 25, 2025.
