Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are living out their dreams!

On Monday, May 13, Universal Pictures released a behind-the-scenes look into the "Passion Project” that is Wicked.

In the YouTube video, which is just over two minutes long, Grande, 30, and Erivo, 37, learn that they have been cast as the leads, Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. The footage was filmed during the pandemic in November 2021, and the film’s director Jon M. Chu delivered the news via webcam.

“Cynthia is so raw and vulnerable, and I couldn’t get her out of my head,” Chu said of his decision to cast the English actress.

After a brief montage of filming on the set, the video cut to a split screen of Chu and Erivo talking via webcam.

On Saturday, May 11, Chu and Michelle Yeoh — who portrays Madame Morrible in the film — attended the 2024 Gold Gala at the Music Center in Los Angeles to celebrate Asian/Pacific Islander excellence.

"Can we please work together more?” Erivo said during her acceptance speech, calling for more collaboration between Black and Asian talent and creatives.

“Because I love the work that we put into the world, but we almost always do it separately, and quite frankly, we’re so much more flavorful when we do it together. So more for us, more for every single one of you in this room, and I hope that I get to see many of your names in lights, and I get to do it with you,” she continued.

Universal's clip also included Erivo and Grande recalling the first time they saw Wicked.

For Erivo, it was her 25th birthday and the show made her feel “really alive.”
