Henry Cavill never got to play James Bond, but filmmaker Matthew Vaughn perhaps gave the former Superman actor the next best thing. Cavill stars as Agent Argylle in Vaughn’s new film “Argylle,” an international super spy who is actually more real than his author even imagined.

That’s the twist of the new Apple Original Film – which Universal will also debut in theaters: “Argylle” isn’t a straightforward spy film where Cavill tangles with a femme fatale played by Dua Lipa while receiving support from his allies (played by John Cena and Oscar winner Ariana DeBose). Instead, Cavill’s Argylle is the creation of a celebrated author named Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), who finds herself unwittingly thrown into a global spy thriller because what she wrote in her fictional books ends up being more factual than she even realized. Only with the help of a fuddy-duddy spy (played by Sam Rockwell) will Elly be able to survive as she’s hunted by various intelligence agencies and ne’er-do-wells.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in an interview published this week, Vaughn said the idea of turning typical spy conventions on its head was a draw for him. “I’m guilty of handsome spies with great haircuts and wonderfully cut suits,” Vaughn said, referencing people who might look like Cavill does in the film. “In reality, if you’re a spy, it’s a pretty dumb thing to do. You’re going to be the guy that gets noticed in the room. A good spy should be the person you least expect the spy to be. And that’s what this movie is all about. It’s like Roger Moore said about James Bond—what sort of spy walks into a room and everyone knows his name and what he likes to drink? It’s ridiculous. We’re having fun destroying these tropes.”

Vaughn directed “Argylle” from a script by Jason Fuchs. The all-star cast also includes Bryan Cranston as the film’s villain and Samuel L. Jackson as an ally who tries to help Elly in the real world.

Watch the trailer below. “Argylle” is out on February 2, 2024.
