Seven years after he conquered El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in the acclaimed documentary “Free Solo,” climber Alex Honnold is tackling a larger summit in the NatGeo three-part series “Arctic Ascent with Alex Honnold.” This time, the world-renowned explorer heads to Greenland and attempts to summit an arctic seacliff called Ingmikortilaq, which has not only never been scaled before, but is also almost 1,000 feet taller than El Cap.

This excursion is much more than an athletic endeavor for Honnold, though. As explained in the trailer for the docuseries, “climate research has barely been done” in this region for almost 20 years. Accompanying Alex on the trek are climbers Hazel Findlay and Mikey Schaefer plus scientists, researchers and guides Dr. Heïdi Semester, Adam Kjeldsen and Aldo Kane, and the team will conduct “meaningful research” as they climb. It will not be easy, though, as the storied climber himself says that Ingmikortilaq “looked like the scariest wall I’d ever seen” and admits of the dangers of this challenge following so quickly after he scaled El Cap that “you can only roll the dice like that so many times.” Indeed, the trailer describes this part of Greenland as “one of the most dangerous environments on Earth.” Watch the full trailer for “Arctic Ascent” above.
