'The Wailing': EW review

In this Cannes-screened horror film from writer-director Na Hong-jin (2010’s The Yellow Sea) a cop played by Do Won Kwak investigates a string of similar but seemingly unconnected slayings in a remote area of Korea. No brilliant Sherlock-type, Kwak’s policeman is rather something of a buffoon, if an endearing one, and his inability to unravel the case becomes increasingly nerve-shredding for the audience as his own daughter starts to behave in an increasingly strange fashion. Despite its epic length, The Wailing never bores as Na slathers his tale with generous supplies of atmosphere and awfulness. B+
