Joy Behar took time on "The View" on Tuesday to apologize for controversial comments she made about Vice President Pence's Christian faith on "The View" last month.

The apology came after Pence's appearance on Monday night's episode of "Hannity," during which he revealed that Behar had called him to personally apologize for the remarks.

"You and I know that criticism comes with public life, but I felt that it was important that I defend the faith of tens of millions of Americans against that kind of slander," Pence told Sean Hannity. "I give Joy Behar a lot of credit: She picked up the phone, she called me, she was very sincere and she apologized."

"One of the things my faith teaches me is grace -- to forgive as you've been forgiven," he continued. "I said to Joy, 'Of course I'll forgive ya.' That's part of my faith experience, but I did encourage her -- and I'm still encouraging her -- to use the forum of that program or some other public forum to apologize to tens of millions of Americans who were equally offended."

That portion of Pence's interview on "Hannity" was aired on "The View" on Tuesday before Behar appeared on camera to publicly apologize for her divisive words.

"So I think Vice President Pence is right," Behar said on Tuesday. "I was raised to respect everyone's religious faith, and I fell short of that. I sincerely apologize for what I said."

The initial comments that she made came during a February discussion of former White House aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman, who called Pence "scary" and "extreme" during her time on "Celebrity Big Brother."

"It's one thing to talk to Jesus," Behar said of Pence's religious views. "It's another thing when Jesus talks to you. That's called mental illness, if I'm not correct -- hearing voices."

CBS News reports that Disney CEO Bob Iger had initially revealed that Behar had apologized to Pence during an investor meeting.
