'Unbroken' finally to be released in Japan
After attempts to have it banned in Japan, Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, which tells the true story of an American’s cruel imprisonment in a Japanese POW camps during World War II, will finally open in Japan.
Unbroken, which was released in the U.S. on Christmas 2014, was met with criticism from some Japanese nationalist groups, which claimed the film presented a false portrayal of Japanese POW camps.
The film stars Jack O’Connell as Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete who spent years enduring brutal conditions as a prisoner of war. Zamperini, who died in 2014 at the age of 97, worked closely with Jolie on the film before his death.“The physical endurance, the coming to the light, the handing yourself over and finding something that’s beyond yourself, the ability to face your life… He’s just inspirational,” Jolie told EW in 2014.
An employee of Japanese distribution company Bitters End Inc. told The Wall Street Journal that Unbroken will open in Tokyo in February before expanding to additional theaters.
