'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Crushes Box Office Opening Weekend Expectations, Grossing $230 Million
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is on pace to bring in up to $230 million at the box office, making it the second-highest opening weekend in film history, according to multiple industry reports.
The eighth entry in the ongoing Star Wars saga is only surpassed by the seventh entry, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which grossed nearly $248 million.
The Last Jedi picks up where The Force Awakens ended, with The Resistance -- led by Princess Leia in an emotional last performance by Carrie Fisher -- in tatters after being decimated by The First Order, and Rey finally meeting Luke Skywalker in a desperate attempt to get him to join their efforts. The ensuing 153 minutes carry enough twists and turns to keep viewers constantly on the edge of their seats.
The film has received nearly universal praise from critics, though the choices made by director Rian Johnson have left some fans divided about the latest entry in the beloved series.
Regardless of their take on The Last Jedi, Star Wars fans won't have to wait long for more from the galaxy far, far away. Solo: A Star Wars Story, which will chronicle the adventures of a young Han Solo, opens May 25. That will be followed by the final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the as-yet unnamed Star Wars: Episode IX, which is set to open Dec. 20, 2019.
And after that? Disney recently announced that Johnson has been given the keys to helm a brand new Star Wars trilogy set outside of the Skywalker saga.
ET sat down with actress Daisy Ridley earlier this month, when she clarified comments that she was leaving the Star Wars franchise behind after its current trilogy.
