'Sleepy Hollow' renewed, new showrunner named
Ichabod Crane has dodged another swinging ax. Sleepy Hollow will get a third season—and a new showrunner too.
Fox has renewed supernatural drama for another year. Plus executive producer Clifton Campbell (The Glades, White Collar) has signed on to take over the writers’ room next season. Mark Goffman, who ran the series the first two years, was previously announced as leaving the show.
“Sleepy Hollow is truly inventive television,” said Fox entertaiment president David Madden. “I had the pleasure of working with Clifton on both The Glades and White Collar. He is an excellent producer, and we can’t wait to see what this team has in store for season 3.”
The conclusion of season 2 left Crane (Tom Mison) and Lieutenant Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) having triumphed over evil but their actions resulted in the death of Katrina Crane (Katia Winter), who was the target of considerable fan scorn. We’re told the third season will “explore how the partnership between Crane and Mills will evolve and what challenges these two witnesses will now face.”
The renewal comes after the Monday drama suffered a precarious viewership drop during its sophomore season that had some fans worried about its fate. Given Campbell’s recent resume of procedural crime dramas, one expects season 3 of Sleepy Hollow to have a less serialized and more threat-of-the-week format. Oftentimes when serialized shows get into ratings trouble, the instinct is to make it easier for fans to dive back in on any given week (a note the show has already received).
