The New Posters for the 'Downton Abbey' Movie Will Make You Emotional

Fans of Downton Abbey were elated to discover that the much-anticipated movie version of the show was finally happening. And at long last it's been revealed that the movie has actually started shooting.

Here's everything we know so far about the forthcoming Downton Abbey movie:

It will premiere on September 20, 2019.

The Downton Abbey film will premiere on Friday, September 20, 2019 in North America and Friday, September 13, 2019 internationally, according to a press release.

It already has a teaser trailer.

A first look at the upcoming film shows dramatic scenes of the iconic estate in all its glory.

There are first look photos of the movie, too.

Entertainment Weekly shared the first images from the Downton Abbey film, teasing Lady Mary, Lady Edith, Lord Grantham, and of course, the Dowager Countess.

Official character posters have also been released.

The movie has been in the works since the TV show wrapped.

Following what feels like eons of rumors, NBCUniversal International Studios officially confirmed that the Downton Abbey movie is coming.

“There’s a movie in the works," studio president Michael Edelstein told AP at the opening of “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition" in Singapore back in June 2017. "It’s been in the works for some time... We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the (cast) together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things."

Some members of the cast were the last to find out.

Apparently, no one told the show's cast that the movie was in development; Laura Carmichael, who starred as Lady Edith on the show, told AP, “Well, tell my agent, because we’re still waiting to know. We’re hoping that will happen soon," while Sophie McShera, who played Daisy, said, "You’ve got confirmation before us. We have no idea if that’s happening." McShera continued, “But we would all love to be part of the film if it was to happen, for sure.”

Meanwhile, the mastermind behind the series, showrunner Julian Fellowes, told AP, “I think we’ve got a film in us. I hope it happens."

Not everyone was initially on board with the movie idea.

But there's one member of the cast who wasn't totally on board. In May 2017, Dame Maggie Smith said, "I just think it's squeezing it dry," when asked about a Downton Abbey movie.

However, she's since been confirmed as starring in the movie, according to IMDb, and will return as the inimitable Dowager Countess Violet Crawley.

Filming has started thanks to Focus Features and Carnival Films.

Announcing the happy new in a press release on August 31, 2018, it was revealed that the Downton Abbey movie had officially started production. While a release date has yet to be set, IMDb suggests that the film will come out in 2019.

The movie will introduce several new characters.

Alongside all of your Downton Abbey faves, a plethora of famous faces will be joining the cast. Imelda Staunton, who fans will recognize from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, will appear alongside Geraldine James, Simon Jones, David Haig (who recently featured in Killing Eve), Tuppence Middleton, Kate Phillips, and Stephen Campbell Moore.

Original cast members will return.

Alongside Dame Maggie Smith, a number of original cast members are attached to the Downton Abbey movie, including Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Lesley Nicol, and Laura Carmichael.

According to a release from Focus Features, additional cast members are: Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Matthew Goode, Harry Hadden-Paton, David Haig, Geraldine James, Robert James-Collier, Simon Jones, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Sophie McShera, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Campbell Moore, Kate Phillips, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, and Penelope Wilton.

The plot.

Vanity Fair is predicting that, as the series ended in 1925, the movie is likely to touch upon the years that follow. In particular, the publication points out that characters Cora and Robert got married in 1890, meaning that their 40th anniversary would be due to take place in 1930, giving the characters the perfect excuse to reunite.
