'Dog Day Afternoon' to be adapted for Broadway play

Dog Day is headed to Broadway. 

Sidney Lumet’s 1975 movie, starring Al Pacino and John Cazale, is set to become a stage play with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis (The Motherf—er with the Hat). 

The film, which was based on the true story of a man robbing a bank in order to fund a sex change operation for his lover, takes place primarily in the confines of a bank during a hot summer day in New York City, so it’s easy to imagine how the narrative could work on the stage. 

The Dog Day Afternoon stage adaptation comes in the wake of another Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures production, Misery, which stars Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf.

There’s no word yet on when Dog Day Afternoon is expected to open.
