Peter Capaldi’s time as the twelfth Doctor on Doctor Who has come to an end, and now Jodie Whittaker has taken up the role in this season’s Christmas episode after a touching goodbye from the old before the new took up the reins of her Tardis.
In a clip shared by BBC, the final moments of Capaldi’s Doctor are bittersweet as he gives his replacement some advice before he regenerates and is gone forever. “I’ve got a few things to say to you, basic stuff first. Never be cruel, never be cowardly, and never eat pears. Remember: hate is always foolish and love is always wise. Always try to be nice, and never fail to be kind. Oh, and you mustn’t tell anyone your name. No one would understand it anyway. Except, children. Children can hear it, sometimes if their hearts are in the right place and the stars are too. Children can hear your name.”
And like that, “aw, brilliant” cements her arrival in a long line of memorable first words from The Doctor.

Initially, some fans weren’t keen on the idea that a woman could take the lead role in the long-running sci-fi series, but BBC quickly swooped in and made it clear with a statement that there was a canonical reason for the switch, so there’s nothing to get upset about, saying: “The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey and it has been established in the show that Time Lords can switch gender.”

Also, it was just time a woman took up the mantle. There’s nothing wrong with that. Now the fanbase braces for the incoming questions about the various English accents The Doctor has had over the years, perhaps.
Absolutely overwhelmed and can't quite put into words how happy this makes me seeing how far we've come as a society and progressive we are at last.
Finally we can now say…
THE DOCTOR IS FROM YORKSHIRE.#DoctorWho

The Doctor turned into a woman. Then there was a joke, some explosions and a cliffhanger. Everything’s changed. Nothing’s changed. Merry Christmas and a brilliant 2018 to you, #DoctorWho.
