'Work It' premiere ratings: Cross-dressing sitcom debuts limp

'Work It' premiere ratings limp, 'NCIS' rises

It’s going to take more than a skirt and lipstick to make these numbers look pretty.

The ABC’s cross-dressing comedy Work It opened weakly in the ratings on Tuesday night. About 6.1 million viewers tuned in for the sitcom at 8:30 p.m., with a 2.0 rating in the adult demo. That’s down from lead-in Last Man Standing, which had 7.9 million viewers and a 2.4 rating. The modest debut is despite the show’s biggest comedy competitor, Fox’s Glee, airing a repeat. Work It was also down 17 percent from the premiere of the now-defunct Man Up in the slot. Critics have not been kind (“So bad,” wrote Ken Tucker, “you felt a little sorry for it”), and organizations like GLAAD have accused the comedy of offending the transgender community.

The second episode of ABC’s new reality spin-off Celebrity Wife Swap (6 million, 2.2) fared slightly better at 9 p.m., and Body of Proof (7 million, 1.5) was flat.

Meanwhile, CBS had a good night: The network won the night with NCIS (20 million, 4.2) and NCIS: LA (17.1 million, 3.5), both up 17 percent from their last episodes three weeks ago, and Unforgettable (11.6 million, 2.5), up 14 percent.

NBC’s two-hour Biggest Loser premiere (6.4 million, 2.3) was down 30 percent from last January’s opener and had its lowest-rated spring debut ever. Biggest Loser was down pretty far in the fall, too. What do you think is behind the drops this season? Should Loser have figured out a way to keep Jillian Michaels? The news didn’t help Parenthood (4.9 million, 1.7), down 17 percent from a few weeks ago to a series low.
