'American Assassin' trailer: Dylan O'Brien fights terrorists and Taylor Kitsch

Dylan O’Brien is back in action. After the Maze Runner star was placed out of commission due to an injury on the set of The Death Cure, the actor can now be seen in the first American Assassin trailer as a promising but haunted C.I.A. black ops recruit, Mitch Rapp.

As the story goes, the death of Rapp’s fiancée propelled him to give up everything (well, “not everything,” as he says) and battle terrorists. But first, he needs to learn the ropes, which is where he meets Michael Keaton’s Stan Hurley. Keaton has been riding his post-Birdman wind with films like The Founder and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Now, his Cold War veteran will put Mitch through the ringer to see if he has what it takes to survive the C.I.A. selection process.

While investigating a pattern of seemingly random attacks for Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan), the pair team up with a Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) in order to take down a “mysterious operative” (Taylor Kitsch), who’s jonesing to start the next World War.

“We kill people who need to be killed,” Mitch says in the trailer before going to work in a hotel room fist fight.

Based on Vince Flynn’s book of the same name, American Assassin is directed by Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger) based on a screenplay from Stephen Schiff, Michael Finch, Edward Zwick, and Marshall Herskovitz.

The film, also featuring Scott Adkins, opens in theaters on Sep. 15. Watch O’Brien brawl it out in the trailer above.
