Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell showcase their much-discussed chemistry in the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ romantic comedy “Anyone but You,” premiering in theaters on Dec. 22.

Directed by Will Gluck (“Easy A”), “Anyone but You” has been touted as a loose modernization of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” The film’s official logline reads, “When college arch-nemeses reunite years after graduation for a destination wedding, they pretend to be a couple for their own personal reasons. But through pretending, they actually fall in love.”

“Let’s just tell everyone we’re together,” Sweeney says to Powell while they take a sunset sailboat ride. “There’s no way we could convince anyone we actually like each other,” he responds. Though the two roll their eyes, footage flashing throughout the trailer makes it clear their chemistry is undeniable.

Sweeney became a breakout star in HBO’s “Euphoria,” while Powell is best known for his role in the hit blockbuster sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.” They are joined in “Anyone but You” by rom-com fixture Dermot Mulroney (“My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “The Wedding Date”), Michelle Hurd (“Star Trek: Picard”), Alexandra Shipp (“Tick, Tick … Boom!”), Darren Barnet (“Never Have I Ever”), Rachel Griffiths (“Six Feet Under”), Bryan Brown (“Australia”), GaTa “Dave,” Hadley Robinson (“Little Women”) and Joe Davidson (“Neighbours”).

Gluck co-wrote the film with Ilana Wolpert (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”) and produces with Jeff Kirschenbaum and Joe Roth. Executive producers include Sweeney, Alyssa Altman, Jacqueline Monetta and Natalie Seller.

The film was first announced in January after paparazzi and fans spotted the production in Australia, immediately stirring up rumors of a real-life romance. In April, Sweeney and Powell made an appearance at CinemaCon and stunned audiences with raunchy first footage.

“Sydney plays a character [who is] a real nightmare,” Powell told the audience, to which Sweeney rebutted that Powell’s character is an “asshole.” Sweeney continued, “What better place to put a nightmare and an asshole than on the other side of the world in the most romantic setting imaginable?”

In Sweeney’s Variety cover story in August, she addressed the speculation, saying: “It’s a rom-com. That’s what people want! Glen and I don’t really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he’s such a hard worker, and I’m a hard worker. We’re excited for the press tour, and I literally just left ADR with him. We talk all the time like, ‘That’s really funny.’”
