Anya Taylor-Joy’s "Burnt" French Manicure Is True Grunge Perfection

An unexpected spring mani.

The most exciting thing to happen to red carpet style lately is no doubt seeing actors lean into the style of their characters. Margot Robbie’s Barbie press tour comes to mind, along with Zendaya’s Dune and Challengers carpet looks, respectively. The latest celebrity to try character-core? Anya Taylor-Joy. The actor went full grunge with her latest look promoting her newest film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at Cinemacon in Las Vegas.

The actor wore an all-black look from Ludovic de Saint Sernin’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection that looked like grommet belts from the 2010s (you know the ones) wrapped around her to create an edgy mini dress. She paired her dress with a black pair of stilettos. While there’s no doubt that her outfit would have been Tumblr-famous back in the day, we’d argue her “burnt” French manicure by nail artist Kim Truong is the cherry on top of her sci-fi-inspired look.

In photos it’s hard to get a clear look at her manicure. However, her almond-shaped nails have a true nude base that appears to be feathered out to a matte black French tip. If you look really closely, you can see a thin line of red between the base and the tips, making it look like her nails have been singed by a flame.

Even without the "burnt" detail, the slightly smudged tips added to her overall un-done yet red-carpet-ready look. We’ve seen the return of grunge makeup in all different forms so far this year—from smudged eyeliner to skinny brows and dark lids. Taylor-Joy usually sticks to feminine, ethereal looks, so its fun to see her try something edgy for the character.

The rest of her glam followed suit with the grunge aesthetic. Her hairstylist, Gregory Russell, gave her a Pam Anderson-esque top knot with her bleached (nearly white) blonde hair. For makeup, MUA Georgie Eisdell added a smoky eye with dramatic brows and a brown lip. Hints of pink lightly dotted her cheeks for an overall matte, smoky look.

Taylor-Joy posted the look to her Instagram with the caption “Vroommmmm. Thank you so much @cinemacon for helping us get our engines started in style. To a wonderful journey ahead.” Don’t mind us, just vroom-ing to the salon to re-create her look!
