Anthony and Joe Russo Talk Spider-Man in 'Captain America: Civil War'

Before Tom Holland swings into theaters July 2017 with Spider-Man: Homecoming, he’ll greet audiences in Captain America: Civil War. Yahoo Movies had the opportunity to sit down with Civil War’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo. We asked the Russo brothers exactly when they knew they were going to get to use your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in their film.

“It was very early on in the development process,” said Anthony. “I mean, not long after — once we really locked into the idea of Civil War. We knew we loved the character. Again, it was like a creative dream. Can we possibly get this character in this movie?”

Spider-Man, who will be taking on the Vulture in Homecoming, is coming to Marvel now only because of an agreement between the company and Sony, which owns the film rights to the Web Head. The Russos are grateful that something could be worked out. “We are eternally grateful to Kevin Feige and all the folks at Sony for figuring out the deal with each other to make [Spider-Man in Civil War] possible. It’s the rarest of occurrences, in sort of the way Hollywood studios cooperate with each other. But it worked, and Spider-Man’s in the movie. And we all benefit from that.”
