Instant Commentary: Paul Rudd Discovers 'Ant-Man' Suit (Exclusive Clip)

Consider Ant-Man the first big-screen superhero to discover his suit by accident. In our new episode of “Instant Commentary” (which you can watch above), Ant-Man director Peyton Reed and producer/Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige walk us through the sequence that leads up to said discovery, with recently freed ex-con Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) in the middle of robbery and attempting to crack a seemingly impenetrable safe.

“We talked about MacGyver a lot,” Reed admitted, paying homage to one of entertainment’s most resourceful problem. “We also talked about MacGruber a lot.”

Rudd and Adam McKay, who did rewrites on the script together, ultimately consulted with a security expert who, like Lang, apparently has his own shady past (“he was the real-life Scott Lang,” Reed said); it was the consultant who recommended they bust the safe (made with the same metal as the Titanic) open with liquid nitrogen. “It’s based enough in science that it works,” the director explained.

Of course, once Lang finds the suit, powered with the ability to shrink down to the size of an ant, he thinks it’s for a motorcyclist. The disappointment won’t last long, though.

Ant-Man opens July 17. Watch the exclusive clip without commentary here:
