It is undeniable the influence Selena had not just over the music but pop culture in general. With her beauty, brains, and talent there is no telling where she could have been in terms of dominating the music industry. She stole our hearts with hits like "Como La Flor" y "Amor Prohibido" as staples in everyone's playlist, and now her image will be reintroduced to millions with Netflix's announcement of a new series about Selena and her life. This unlike the film will be an even more meticulous look into who Selena was at the core of it all. It will show us her humble start, and her need to succeed. But, a lot of people are not excited for this and think the first time is a charm. J Lo did an incredible job as Selena and maybe it would be best to just leave it at that.
Of course, fitting the entirety of such a beloved figure's life into a 1 hour and 45 minutes cant be enough. With something like an episodic show there will be more room for details, and little things that we didn't know about Selena. We could learn about her worries and the things she loved most to do. Stuff that made her upset, and activities that brought her joy. It could be a beautiful gift to her loyal fanbase and keep her memory alive. At the end of the day she is such an icon, and people are very protective over their icons.
When the quick teaser trailer was released last year, it went viral. The comments were mixed. Some people criticized the actress who was chosen to play her, saying she doesn't look anything like Selena. Even going as far to body shame her. Criticizing basically everything about her. Others expressed how excited they were to experience Selena and her music again in such a professional way. The trailer also was a tad confusing considering some thought it was about the journey of filming "Selena" the movie, and then others said no, this is about her life. So, the details are still up in the air. All in all people are anticipating their fingers crossed how this will play out.
It is said that like with the movie "Selena" which jumpstarted J Lo's career, Selena's family will be involved. This a great sign considering the approval is only right, and morally just. In my opinion, if the family signed off on it then I trust their judgment. After all who knows you better than your family? If this is deemed as successful by critics and people alike could this be the birth of a new star. Will the actress playing Selena become a household name. Let us wait and see.
