Another Relatable Amy Schumer Mom-Moment: 'It's Felt Good to Be Back at Work'

Amy Schumer is one of our favorite celebrity funny moms — and her recent Instagram post detailing exactly how she’s been feeling about returning to work after maternity leave proves that she may just be our favorite relatable celebrity mom, too. Schumer revealed that she felt “afraid” to return to work and was “worried about it.” But she was also super-candid about a post-maternity leave emotion we don’t always hear much about: that “it’s felt good to be back at work.”

Essentially, her feelings mirror that of so many other work-outside-the-home mamas we know, navigating the rocky emotional terrain of going back to work after baby. There’s the fear of leaving your little baby and the sadness of not spending every waking moment with them, but also, sometimes, relief — relief to have some bit of your “old self” back, and relief to get a break. And, if you’re lucky enough to love your job, there’s even some excitement at doing something else that nourishes you and contributes to your sense of self-worth.

“5 months today and like all moms I love him so much it hurts,” Schumer wrote. “Im feeling strong and good and like I’m still a human being with interests and ambitions and goals I’m excited to reach. It’s felt good to be back at work. I was so worried about it and was afraid to go back after he was 3 months old. A couple days I’ve cried from missing him. But it’s mostly good to be back and the breaks energize me to be a better mom and appreciate our time even more. I have it a lot easier than many people but I wanted to share my experience.”

Her experience, needless to say, was a huge hit with her fans. “@amyschumer thank you for being so real about what it is to be a woman and mother” wrote one. “Everything about this is so beautiful, @amyschumer. Thank You so much for sharing this” commented another.

Schumer ended her post with a question for other moms: “what was your going back to work experience?” And after moms shared — the post, which went up on Saturday, has more than 11,000 comments so far — she responded, “These comments are so good to read. Thank you” with a heart emoji.

We couldn’t agree more. It’s heartening — and important, really — for moms to feel empowered to share all their feelings about their parenting experiences. And to have a mom as down to earth and relatable as Schumer (who could forget her hilarious response to Jessica Simpson’s baby-weight loss?) start a conversation about all of the feelings involved in returning to work after maternity leave…well, that deserves a heart emoji, indeed.
